The Columbus Blue Jackets look to start their season off on the right foot as they head into the Motor City to do battle with the Detroit Red Wings.
The Blue Jackets look to get back into the Eastern Conference playoffs this season and have the roster to do so as they should be a competitive team in the Metro division and on Thursday night they face off against a Red Wings side coming off a terrible campaign. Columbus has one of the league’s best goaltenders in Sergei Bobrovsky and if the Russian net minder can have another top end caliber season the Jackets could very well shock the league and claim top spot in the Metro division, but they will need some of their secondary scoring pieces to step up as well as they are in a very tough collection of teams. Bobrovsky is expected to get the nod here as he will face off against Jimmy Howard who will look for a rebound campaign in the Detroit crease.
The Red Wings took some time to adjust to life without Pavel Dastyuk after he retired from the NHL and now they have lost another Red Wings legend as Henrik Zetterberg has been forced to retire early. Detroit does have some young, talented forwards led by Dylan Larkin and rookie Filip Zadina but they are still a season or two away from being back in the discussion of the postseason and this could very well be another long campaign at Little Caesar’s Arena. The Wings have been terrible against the Jackets of late as they are 5-16 in their last 21 meetings with Columbus and things don’t look much better in this spot.
The under is 13-3-2 in the last 18 meetings between these two sides while the Blue Jackets have won five of the last six show downs in Detroit. The Blue Jackets have the deeper roster and should have no trouble finding a way to win their season opener in enemy territory.
