The Columbus Blue Jackets look to play their way out of their losing skid as they head into the Motor City to face off against the Detroit Red Wings.
The Blue Jackets got off to a fast start but have since played their way into a slump and need to find a way out of it in a hurry as they take on the Wings on Saturday less than 24 hours after a loss at home against the Carolina Hurricanes. Columbus has a decent roster with one of the league’s best goaltenders but to me they are still a bit overrated and last season’s regular season run was a bit of an aberration as they are still a piece or two away from competing seriously in the Eastern Conference and whether that comes from inside or through a trade I think Columbus will be out to add another player throughout the season. Joonas Korpisalo could potentially see the start here with the Jackets in a back to back as they head into Little Caesar’s Arena to face off with the Red Wings.
The Red Wings meanwhile return home after a lengthy road trip and they will hope some home cooking will get them back in the win column as they have been struggling mightily against Eastern Conference foes dating back to last season and have a frustrated Jackets side coming into town on Saturday. The Wings fell short of the playoffs for the first time in over two decades last season but optimism has been restored as they are officially transitioning into a new group of core players and while it may take more than last season to get back into the playoff thick every season I do think they will be competitive for a wild card spot and a win here against another potential wild card team would be a nice confidence boost for them.
The Jackets are 5-2 in their last seven against the Atlantic and 5-12 in their last 17 road games while the Wings are 1-6 in their last seven playing on one day’s rest and 7-1 in their last eight home games following a week long road trip. The Jackets are the better team and aren’t playing well at the moment and I think they need a strong effort here to get back on track which should lead to a road win.
