New Jersey Devils (20-21-9) at Detroit Red Wings (20-20-9)
|Date & Time||Tuesday January 31, 2017, 7:30 PM (EST)|
The Line: Detroit Red Wings -135 / New Jersey Devils +110 --- Over/Under: 5
The New Jersey Devils open the second half of the NHL hockey schedule on the road against the Detroit Red Wings.
The New Jersey Devils have their backs against the wall when the playoffs are the topic of discussion and they were looking for a win heading in to the break to use as a building block after the All Star break. Sounded good but their opponent was red hot Washington and the result was a 5-2 defeat Thursday. The Capitals were strong in all areas with Evgeny Kuznetsov leading the offense with a pair of goals with Alex Ovechkin, Lars Eller and Andre Burakovsky also scoring while Braden Holtby logged 27 stops for the win. The Devils never got their offense going with Adam Henrique and Stefan Noesen scoring and Corey Schneider forced in to action with Keith Kinkaid getting pulled in the second.
The Detroit Red Wings and the playoffs have always been a foregone conclusion but the team hasn’t been at their best this year and the Eastern Conference is absolutely packed with good teams. It didn’t help their cause that a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the visiting Maple Leafs ended their six game points streak with Petr Mrazek stopping 24 shots in absorbing the loss. Toronto is heading in the opposite direction with a hot goalie in Frederik Andersen brushing aside 22 shots for his second straight shutout while receiving plenty of support. Roman Polak, James van Riemsdyk, Auston Matthews and Nikita Soshnikov providing the scoring.
The Devils are 4-0 in their last 4 road games and the under is 3-0-1 in Devils last 4 vs. a team with a losing record while the Devils are 0-4 in their last 4 games playing on 3 or more days rest. The over is 3-0-1 in Red Wings last 4 when their opponent allows 5 goals or more in their previous game and the over is 4-0 in Red Wings last 4 when their opponent scores 2 goals or less in their previous game while the over is 3-0-1 in Red Wings last 4 Tuesday games. The Devils are 2-10 in the last 12 meetings in Detroit and the over is 6-2-1 in the last 9 meetings while the Devils are 2-6 in the last 8 meetings.
It looks like the Red Wings have had the upper hand in this match up but I don’t know if this game is worth betting…
