The Rangers head to Joe Louis Arena on Saturday looking to end their two game losing skid while the Red Wings are coming off an ugly loss early in the week against the Ottawa Senators.
The New York Rangers have been one of the league’s power houses over the last few seasons as they’re always in the conversation of Stanley Cup favourites especially after seemingly always landing one or two key free agents every summer. However, the Rangers are struggling mightily at the moment as they’re a disappointing 2-6 on the year and will be without their best player in Henrik Lundqvist for a little bit as he nurses an injury. Cam Talbot is taking over as the starter net minder for the time being and while he played pretty well in a losing effort against the Flyers he is facing a different horse here as the Wings are one of the best teams in the East.
The Red Wings looked abysmal in a 6-1 drubbing by the Ottawa Senators earlier this week in what was new Wings forward and former Sens captain Daniel Alfredsson’s first game against his former club. Ottawa dominated the game from start to finish as they played the role of Cup favourite while the Red Wings looked like a novice team by comparison. That is absolutely horrible news for the Rangers as you can expect a rejuvenated and refocused bunch in this one as head coach Mike Babcock is one of the best at getting his players to respond and with so much time in between you can be sure that Detroit will demand a better effort here tonight. While the Blue Shirts are a good value team at the moment as they’re better than their record indicates I don’t see this being the spot to take them as I think the Wings pound them in a laugher.
