New York Rangers (43-23-2) at Detroit Red Wings (26-29-11)
|Date & Time||Sunday March 12, 2017, 7:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: Detroit Red Wings -110 / New York Rangers -110 --- Over/Under: 5.5
The Detroit Red Wings host the New York Rangers in Sunday NHL hockey action.
The Detroit Red Wings are not going to the playoffs because of their struggling offense so the next best thing is playing spoiler. The Red Wings played that role to perfection Friday in a 4-2 victory versus Western Conference heavyweight the Chicago Blackhawks. Tomas Tater paced the Wings offense with a pair of goals with Xavier Ouellet and Andreas Athanasiou also lighting the lamp of Jimmy Howard and his 24 stops in his first start since before Christmas. The Blackhawks received goals from Trevor Van Riemsdyk and Artemi Panarin with Corey Crawford absorbing the loss. The Red Wings ended their three game slide while the Blackhawks dropped back to back contests.
The New York Rangers are going to the postseason so the question is what seed so that makes two points very important. The Rangers were supposed to be easy winners at the Carolina Hurricanes but it didn’t go their way with a 4-3 loss on Thursday. With Rick Nash and Henrik Lundqvist out with injuries, Mika Zibanejad scored twice on the power play with Chris Kreider also scoring with the man advantage. NYR backup netminder Antti Raanta recorded 26 stops but failed to protect a 3-2, third period lead. Sebastian Aho led the Hurricanes attack with two goals on the power play in the third with Valentin Zykov and Jeff Skinner also joining the scoring column. Cam Ward recorded 40 stops to pick up the win for the Canes.
The under is 6-1-1 in Rangers last 8 vs. Atlantic and the Rangers are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. Atlantic while the over is 12-3-3 in Rangers last 18 road games vs. a team with a losing home record. The Red Wings are 1-6 in their last 7 games playing on 1 days rest and the over is 5-1 in Red Wings last 6 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 days situation while the Red Wings are 1-4 in their last 5 overall. The under is 4-0-2 in the last 6 meetings in Detroit and the under is 10-1-3 in the last 14 meetings while the Rangers are 2-9 in the last 11 meetings in Detroit.
The numbers say Red Wings and the under have been money makers but with the Rangers injuries I don’t know if the trends hold value so for now I lean under…
