The Red Wings look to extend their winning streak to five games as they host the Flyers at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday night.
The Flyers are coming off a tough loss but have won 6 of their last 10 contests and have made up some ground in the Metropolitan division despite sitting 13 points back of the Penguins for top spot. Philadelphia is a complicated team as they have a solid roster and a balance in goal but can’t seem to find the consistency necessary to be competitive on a nightly basis and as such they have fallen behind in the playoff race. The Flyers will likely go back with Steve Mason in this one after Ray Emery got the nod in the Flyers’ last game and while Emery has been to three Stanley Cups and won one of them last year with the Blackhawks it is the young Mason who the Flyers have turned to more often than the veteran “backup.” Mason will likely be matched up with Jimmy Howard who has handled the bulk of the goaltending duties in the Motor City.
The Red Wings are starting to assert themselves as a favourite in the Eastern Conference – a label that was spelled on them early in the season after they shifted over from the West – but something that is only coming to fruition now. Detroit has ripped off four straight wins and looks like a team on a mission right now and this is without Pavel Datsyuk who is nursing an injury and it is uncertain when he will be back in the lineup. The Wings are starting to pick up their play at home as well after an ugly streak has them losing six in a row at the Joe but now they can begin to right the ship as the Flyers are a weary road team as they’re 5-6-2 away from home. I like the Red Wings to continue their winning ways but they’re too heavy a favourite for me in this one so to take off some juice the best method would be to make a regulation play which I think they get here.
