The Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings play Saturday night at the Joe Louis Arena after playing Friday night in Toronto.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are 2-3 on the season and their main downfall continues to be their inconsistent goaltending. In just five games, the Maple Leafs have allowed 18 goals, putting themselves at the bottom of the NHL. In Friday’s loss, James Reimer allowed four goals on 35 shots, and he’s given up eight goals overall on 85 shots faced this season. Of course Jonathan Bernier hasn’t been any better, allowing 10 goals with 85 shots faced. The Toronto Maple Leafs have lost seven of their last eight games when allowing more than two goals. Offensively, Tyler Bozak leads Toronto with three goals, Phil Kessel has three assists and Mike Santorelli is coming off his first goal of the season in Friday’s loss.
The Detroit Red Wings finally broke out of their offensive funk after being held to two or less goals in their first three games. Johan Franzen scored two goals in Detroit’s victory and Gustav Nyquist picked up an assist to go along with his three goals on the season. The Detroit Red Wings have won seven of their last nine regular season games when scoring more than two goals. With the way the Red Wings are playing defense, they’ll be nearly unbeatable if they continue to get that type of offensive production. The Red Wings have killed all 12 of their power play attempts and Jimmy Howard has allowed just seven goals on 106 shots faced. Howard has allowed two or less goals in eight of his last nine regular season games.
The Maple Leafs are 10-25 in their last 35 road games and 1-4 in their last 5 games playing on 0 days rest. The Red Wings are 472-230-27 in their last 729 home games and 1-5 in their last 6 vs. Eastern Conference.
Detroit dominated the Maple Leafs on Friday, and I look for much of that to continue coming back home. Give me the Red Wings for the decent price.
