The Leafs and Red Wings square off in Detroit on Sunday as the Buds look to shake off a road loss in Ottawa while the Wings aim for their third win in a row.
The Toronto Maple Leafs continued their tailspin with a road loss against the Ottawa Senators yesterday as they were blanked by their arch rivals to the tune of a 4-0 final and remain comfortably in the league basement after yet another loss. The Leafs are a measly 2-7-1 in their last 10 contests and have but 55 points to their name which has them in the driver’s seat to land the top overall draft pick, but as we saw last year there is no guarantee that the league’s worst mark translates into the top draft pick. The Buds are likely to go with Jonathan Bernier in this one as Garett Sparks got the call yesterday and he will likely face off against Jimmy Howard who is the expected starter for the Wings. Toronto is 12-21-2 on the road this season while the Red Wings are 18-11-6 at home.
The Red Wings meanwhile are in the thick of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference and have picked a great time to start playing some of their best hockey of the season. Detroit holds on to the first wild card spot at the moment and are just four points back of the Lightning for third in the Atlantic division with 14 games remaining on their schedule. The Wings always seem to play well at home and this season is no different which is a huge factor in why they are such heavy favourites here against the Leafs. The best play in this one is on the total as I think the combination of Bernier and Howard should allow for some pucks to cross the line and hammering the over is the only thing to do here.
