The Washington Capitols visit the Motor City to take the ice with the Detroit Red Wings in Friday NHL action.

The Washington Capitols hope to find a groove with a trip to face the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night. Washington has dropped consecutive contests following a 2-0 defeat versus the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday where the offense stalled and the defense couldn’t carry the team.

Following a scoreless opening period, Connor Brown got the Maple Leafs on the scoreboard at 5:53 where the score stayed until Nazem Kadri ended the Capitols hopes with an open net tally with 22 seconds remaining. Morgan Rielly added a pair of helpers and Frederik Andersen brushed aside 30 shots to log his 11th career shutout.

The Capitols defense responded well from an 8-2 thrashing by the Philadelphia Flyers versus one of the top attacks in the NHL but the offense couldn’t lend a helping hand. As a result, Braden Holtby and his 28 saves ended up in the loss column.

The Detroit Red Wings welcome the Washington Capitols to town for the first meeting between the clubs this year. Detroit has lost consecutive games after a 6-3 defeat at the Toronto Maple Leafs where the defense couldn’t come through.

This game was decided early when the Maple Leafs scored four times on five shots to take a huge lead. The Balanced Leafs attack saw scoring from Zach Hyman, Connor Brown, Nazem Kadri, William Nylander, Auston Matthews and Morgan Rielly. Curtis McElhinney earned a win in his first start for Toronto with 30 stops.

The Red Wings offense came from Tomas Tater, Henrik Zetterberg and Jonathan Ericsson while Nick Jensen logged a trio of helpers. Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard was taken out after giving up three goals on four shots while Petr Mrazek stopped 19-21 shots.

I have been a sports fan since I was old enough to pick up a ball and have always been drawn to competition. I don't participate in sporting events any longer but I do like to provide my opinion on games and writing gives me that outlet. I won't always be right but I always put 100% in to every article I do whether it's the World Series or an 0-10 college football team. Mitch shares that same passion and allows me to express myself in my own way.
