The Line: Detroit Red Wings +150 / Washington Capitals -170 --- Over/Under: 5
NHL hockey comes to the Motor City when the Washington Capitals visit the Detroit Red Wings.
The Washington Capitals have had their week off and we’ll see if rust from too much time off can slow them. The Capitals defeated Anaheim 6-4 last Saturday for win number six in a row as the top club in the NHL was in a groove before the long vacation. The balanced Caps offense featured goals from Zach Stanford, Daniel Winnik, Nicklas Backstrom, TJ Oshie and Marcus Johansson with 18 saves from Braden Holtby being good enough for the win. Ryan Getzlaf led the Ducks with a pair of tallies and two helpers with Hampus Lindholm and Jakob Silfverberg also lighting the lamp while John Gibson recorded 33 saves in the loss.
The Detroit Red Wings are trying to extend their string of playoff appearances but ran in to a hot goalie and hot St. Louis Blues club Wednesday in a 2-0 defeat. Blues netminder Carter Hutton might not be well known to the average fan but opponents know him after 25 saves gave him back to back shutouts and four in eight contests. The Blues received a goal from Ivan Barbashev just 2:06 in to the opening frame with Jaden Schwartz adding an empty netter to seal the deal with seconds left and Detroit goalie Petr Mrazek pulled for the extra attacker. The Red Wings have now dropped six in a row as their postseason hopes faded further.
The Capitals are 5-0 in their last 5 Saturday games and the Capitals are 0-6 in their last 6 games playing on 3 or more days rest while the over is 4-0-2 in Capitals last 6 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of less than .400. The Red Wings are 0-5 in their last 5 overall and the Red Wings are 0-4 in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a winning road record while the Red Wings are 0-6 in their last 6 after scoring 2 goals or less in their previous game. The Capitals are 4-0 in the last 4 meetings and the under is 5-1-1 in the last 7 meetings while the home team is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
The numbers say Washington and the under have been productive but I need to see goalies and the Caps week off is a worry…
