The Winnipeg Jets look to shake off a tough loss on the road against the Capitals last night as they head into the Motor City to face off with the Detroit Red Wings.
The Jets battled hard all night long with the Capitals and came back from a 3-0 deficit to tie things up but ultimately lost by a 4-3 final but still earned a point on the road in a very tough building to get a win. Winnipeg is a very polarizing team as some circles have them as a potential dark horse come playoff time while others think they will be back drafting in the top five again in the offseason but it is tough to call as they have the personnel to compete but have regressed over the last couple of seasons and are without one of their best players right now in Jacob Trouba who will likely never suit up for the Jets again. As for tonight though, the Jets will send Connor Hellebuyck to the crease as he will face off against Petr Mrazek.
The Red Wings are off to a 6-4-1 start and are another team that should be on the cusp of the playoffs, but when it comes to the Wings it is almost a certainty that they will qualify as they are in the midst of a record setting 25 year streak of qualifying for hockey’s second season. However, this looks like the year where they may take a step back and even though they are off to a nice start and don’t play in the greatest division they are going to be in tough as they don’t have the offensive flare we have seen in year’s past and Mrazek still has plenty of room to grow as the team’s every day starter.
The Jets are 4-17 in their last 21 against the East and 2-10 in their last 12 against the Atlantic while the Wings are 4-0 in their last four against the Central and 5-0 in their last five against the West. All signs point to a Red Wings victory and while I am not sold on either team I will take the home team who will be well rested and have the edge in the crease.
