Thursday night NHL action features the New York Islanders visiting the Edmonton Oilers.

The hot streak the New York Islanders needed to make a last ditch run at the postseason never materialized. New York is mired in seven game slide following a 4-3 OT loss at Vancouver where Josh Bailey, John Tavares and Jordan Eberle supplied the offense with Jaroslav Halak absorbing the loss with 19 saves.

The Canucks saw Brendan Leipsic sore twice including the winner in the extra session. Leipsic also had an assist to complete a three point night and make the 34 save performance of Jacob Markstron a winner.

The Edmonton Oilers opportunity to make a postseason has come and gone which has been a common theme for this team. Edmonton snapped a three skid with a 4-3 overtime victory versus Arizona with Jason Demers, Christian Dvorak and Niklas Hjaimarsson lit the lamp while Darcy Kuemper took the loss with 32 saves.

The Oilers scored three times in the opening period with Jujhar Khaira, Milan Lucic and Jesse Puljujarvi each finding the back of the net before Oscar Klefbom scored just 50 seconds in to overtime. Leon Draisaitl picked up two assists and Cam Talbot recorded 32 stops for Edmonton.

Islanders are 0-4 in their last 4 road games vs. a team with a losing home record and Islanders are 0-5 in their last 5 road games and Islanders are 0-7 in their last 7 overall. Oilers are 1-7 in their last 8 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400 and over is 5-1 in Oilers last 6 games following a win and Oilers are 1-4 in their last 5 vs. Metropolitan. Islanders are 1-6 in the last 7 meetings in Edmonton and under is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings in Edmonton and home team is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings.

Neither team is going to the playoffs so both are a risky bet but I’ll back Edmonton who has had some success versus the Isles…

I have been a sports fan since I was old enough to pick up a ball and have always been drawn to competition. I don't participate in sporting events any longer but I do like to provide my opinion on games and writing gives me that outlet. I won't always be right but I always put 100% in to every article I do whether it's the World Series or an 0-10 college football team. Mitch shares that same passion and allows me to express myself in my own way.
