The Capitals and Oilers both seek their fourth victory in a row as the teams meet up at Rexall Place in Edmonton on Friday night.
The Washington Capitals kept their winning ways intact with a big time victory over the Vancouver Canucks last night giving them two out of three wins against the Western Canada teams with a chance for the sweep on Friday. The Caps are poised to be one of the big teams in the Eastern Conference this season as they reappeared on the big stage last year after a couple seasons on the back burner and perhaps now more than ever they are ready to make the next step into the league's elite. The Caps are 4-1 through their first five games this season and take on an Edmonton team who has started to find their groove after a slow start and will be looking to head into Sunday with another pivotal win here. Phillip Grubauer will get the start for the Caps as he will take on Cam Talbot.
The Oilers have looked very strong in their last three contests with wins over the Flames, Canucks, and Red Wings and with a fourth in a row here against the Caps it could be time to shed the label of basement dweller for this team. Even in the early going this season when the Oilers were losing hockey games they were very competitive and while they still have some holes on the blue line this is the best bunch they have had since their playoff season in 2006 and it could very well be enough to get them back to the postseason since that run to the Cup finals. Edmonton is on a nice little run here and are getting treated as such by the odds makers as they are basically at a pick em in this spot and with Grubauer getting the call and the Caps playing in the second half of a back to back and no game Saturday for the Oilers I think they have another strong effort and get the win. Cam Talbot has plenty of notes on the Caps from his days with the Rangers and I think that plays a factor here.
