The Oilers look to stay hot on home ice as Connor McDavid and company welcome the Winnipeg Jets to town on Saturday night.
The Winnipeg Jets have had a tough go of things this season and will likely miss out on the Western Conference playoffs and while they are likely to lose a couple of players at the trade deadline they can be happy with one thing this year and that is the retention of defenseman Dustin Byfuglien. The Jets made the playoffs a year ago but were swept in the first round by the Anaheim Ducks and they really haven’t recovered since that as Paul Maurice and his coaching staff haven’t been able to get their offense rolling and have had to deal with a handful of injuries. However, starting goaltender Ondrej Pavelec finally returns from the injured reserve and the Jets are hoping his presence will be enough to get them back in the playoff conversation.
The Oilers meanwhile have had their own injures to deal with and while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins remains sidelined the team is ecstatic to have Connor McDavid back in the mix and he has been absolutely brilliant over the last two weeks. McDavid netted two goals and three assists in Edmonton’s 5-2 win over the Leafs on Thursday night and he will be leaned on again in this spot as he is certainly a difference maker and makes the rest of his teammates better. Jordan Eberle has benefitted from McDavid being back as he scored his first NHL hat trick on Thursday and the tandem alongside Benoit Pouliot is emerging as a go to line for the Oilers who have finally turned a corner and could very well land a playoff spot. The Oilers need to keep their winning ways afloat and I like them to do so again here versus the Jets.
