Team Europe look to continue their strong start to the tournament after an opening night win against the United States as they take on the Czech Republic on Monday night.
Europe pulled off a big upset to start the tournament as they took down the United States on Saturday afternoon and now they can move to 2-0 and book their ticket to the next round as they face off against the Czechs who ere trounced by Canada in their tournament opener. Europe was considered by many to be the longshots to win gold as they are a mashup of players from countries who weren’t invited on their own including Germany, Switzerland, France, Slovakia, and Slovenia but they actually have a ton of talent and solid goaltending and they demonstrated that in their opener against the Americans. Europe is now a favourite in this spot after their strong debut while the Czechs look to shake off their ugly 6-0 loss to the hosts on Saturday night.
The Czech Republic got off to a pretty decent start against Canada but once Sidney Crosby opened the scoring midway through the first period the floodgates opened up and ended in a 6-0 final for the gold medal favourites. The Czechs have long been an international power but their talent pool is starting to run dry as they have slipped out of the upper echelon of men’s hockey powers and perhaps should have been amalgamated with this Europe group as they have some players that are fringe NHL’ers right now. The Czechs could be a nice dog here as they aim to rebound after a sluggish start but top to bottom they are the weaker group and I think Europe gets another victory and punches their ticket to the knockout stage.
