The Arizona Coyotes look to play spoiler on the road as they head into Sunrise to face off against the Florida Panthers on Saturday night.
The Coyotes haven’t had a great season and have been abysmal on the road over the ast two seasons but they have picked up steam over the last couple of weeks and are looking more like a team capable of competing for a playoff spot as early as next season. Arizona has struggled on Saturday’s with a 7-18 mark in their last 25 contests but they have gone on a 9-3 stretch in their last 12 games on one day’s rest and are looking more competitive than we have seen from them for the first half of the season. Arizona will need one of their stronger efforts of the season here though as they take on a Panthers side who has been a completely different group since the all-star break and has ripped off a 16-5 mark in their last 21 home games and are 4-1 in their last five Saturday games.
The Panthers meanwhile have had an up and down season but they have hit their stride over the last month and are making a push to the playoffs with a few weeks left in the season. Florida has a pretty solid roster and are more than capable of pulling off an upset or two along the way in the Eastern Conference playoffs and with an 11-4 mark in their last 15 contests overall it makes sense to see them as a heavy favourite in this spot. Roberto Luongo is expected to get the nod here as he will face off against Anttii Raanta who is playing some of his best hockey of the season and will need a strong effort against the Cats.
The Coyotes are 24-70 in their last 94 road games and are 8-1 in their last nine when their opponent score two or fewer in their previous game while the Panthers are 5-2 in their last seven against the Pacific and 4-1 in their last five Saturday games. Florida needs to keep winning here and while Arizona has been better I think they fall well short here.
