The Sabres head into Florida on Thursday looking for their third win in a row and seventh in their last 10 while the Cats look for their second straight.
The Buffalo Sabres were projected to finish at or near the bottom of the standings despite an influx of young talent on the roster and the addition of Jack Eichel in the draft and while they still could find themselves back in a similar position at season's end they are playing with some swagger right now. The Sabres have won back to back games and are 7-8 to start the season and while that has them second to last in the division and 14 points back of the Canadiens for first place they are playing better than some expected. Chad Johnson will get the start in goal as he will go up against Roberto Luongo who looks to continue his impressive start to the year.
The Panthers meanwhile have stumbled a bit over the couple of weeks as they are just 3-4-3 in their last 10 contests but they have a nice roster and I still believe in them to be a dark horse in the East this season. Florida has a really young group at the epicenter and some nice pieces around it with the glue of the team coming between the pipes in the form of Luongo who remains one of the better goalies in the league. The Cats are 4-2-1 at home this year while the Sabres are 3-3 on the road and while the line is a little bit heavier than I had anticipated in favour of Florida I think they are the only play here as they have the edge across the board and these are the games they need to win.
