The Flames look to pull off the Florida Sweep on Friday night after they took down the playoff bound Lightning in Tampa Bay last night.
Calgary has had a disappointing campaign from a point producing standpoint and they will not be going to the postseason but the way they have competed this year, especially against quality opponents has to provide a silver lining of sorts for this team. Calgary has struggled with consistency but they skated in to Tampa Bay last night to take on a Lightning team that was heavily favoured and blew them out of the water to the tune of a 4-1 final. The Flames will likely select with one of the top five draft picks once the season is over which could land them another top end prospect to go along with rookie sensation Sean Monahan and the tandem could very well send the Flames back to the playoffs as early as next season. Brian Burke, who is currently in charge of the team, is uncertain whether he will return to the fold next year but if he does expect the former Ducks, Canucks, and Maple Leafs GM to be active in the offseason in an attempt to bring in a winning recipe to a starving franchise and fan base.
The Panthers have had a similar season to the Flames in terms of production but it seems like these two teams are heading in opposite directions despite trying to implement the same infrastructure. Florida is three years removed from winning the Southeast division and have taken a huge fall from grace but have still managed to acquire some key prospects that will be the foundation of this team for many years to come. Florida still has a ton of work to do despite the acquisition of Roberto Luongo who solves their goaltending woes for the foreseeable future, as they need some more help up front and signing a franchise blue liner could be a huge asset to them as well. This is a tough game to call as I think the teams are pretty even but after a very successful outing last night I have to side with the Flames to grab another win against a Panthers team who isn’t playing with a ton of motivation at the moment.
