The Dallas Stars look to improve on their dreadful road effort this season as they head into Sunrise to do battle with the Florida Panthers.
The Stars have easily been one of the league’s biggest disappointments this season as they have gone from a dark horse in the Western Conference to a league doormat and at this rate will likely fall well short of the playoffs altogether. Dallas has some excellent pieces in place and are a season removed from an impressive run into hockey’s second season but they may be in for an offseason overhaul as they need some big time help at the back end and could be in the market for a goaltender who can push them over the top, and at this point they are going to have to search outside of the organization. Dallas is expected to send Kari Lehtonen to the crease here as he will face off against James Reimer who will take over as the number one for at least a week as Roberto Luongo recovers from injury.
The Panthers have gone on a second half surge and have played their way back into the playoff picture, but a 1-4 stretch and an injury to their work horse goaltender could spell the end of their chase in the Atlantic. Florida has had success against the Central division as they are 5-1 in their last six games and carry the same mark in their last six Saturday games when the lights shine brightest but with the Stars coming to town here and their back up goaltender in the crease the Cats know they need to step up their game of they could be in for another loss. Florida has also struggled in their last five home games as they have just a single win in that stretch and will have to contain the Stars offense tonight if they want to get the victory.
The Stars are 6-21 in their last 27 road games and 1-5 in their last six after allowing five or more in their previous outing while the Panthers are 5-1 in their last six Saturday games and 1-4 in their last five home games. Dallas is having a miserable season and with the Panthers needing a win here I think they get it done at home.
