The Detroit Red Wings look to right the ship with a trip to face the Florida Panthers on Saturday. Detroit comes off of a 3-2 defeat at the Tampa Bay Lightning where the offense struggled to score and left the team staring at an 0-5-1 record in their last six.
The Red Wings gave the Lightning a run for their money as they drew first blood on an unassisted tally from Frans Nielsen at 14:18 of the first. Tampa Bay responded just 2:15 later on Nikita Kucherov’s power play goal.
Tampa Bay took control in the third period on Steven Stamkos and Brayden Point goals for a 3-1 advantage but Nielsen scored his second with the man advantage with only 1:49 remaining in the game. Jimmy Howard allowed all three goals to get the loss for Detroit while Andrei Vasilevskiy recorded 29 saves for the Lightning.
The Florida Panthers are hoping to begin a hot streak to keep afloat in the standings. Florida has won two of three after overwhelming the visiting Anaheim Ducks 8-3 on Thursday night in one of the biggest offensive games in the league this season.
The explosive Panthers offense featured a hat trick from Radim Vrbata with rookie Owen Tippett scoring his first career goal. Evgenii Dadonov tallied twice while Aleksander Barkov and Vincent Trochek also reached the scoring column for Florida.
Anaheim saw goals from Andrew Cogliano, Logan Shaw and Kalle Kossilla but John Gibson allowed six goals in two periods before Reto Berra gave up two in the third. James Reimer won it for the Panthers with 31 stops to improve to 3-3.
Red Wings are 0-5 in their last 5 games playing on 1 days rest and Red Wings are 0-6 in their last 6 overall and under is 6-1 in Red Wings last 7 vs. Atlantic. Over is 4-0 in Panthers last 4 home games and over is 8-1 in Panthers last 9 overall and over is 6-1 in Panthers last 7 vs. Eastern Conference. Over is 3-0-1 in the last 4 meetings in Florida and road team is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings and over is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings.
We know Detroit will not lose every game and to me that makes this a dangerous squad. I’ll back Florida until I see goalies because they are 3-1 on home ice…
