Detroit Red Wings (25-19-12) at Florida Panthers (22-27-7)
|Date & Time||Thursday February 6, 2014, 7:30 PM (EST)|
The Line: Florida Panthers -105 / Detroit Red Wings -105 --- Over/Under: 5
The Florida Panthers and Detroit Red Wings will meet for the fifth and final time this season when Detroit travels down south to the BB&T Center. Although most could agree the Red Wings are the better team, it is the Panthers that lead the season series with a 3-1 edge.
These teams met just a week ago in Detroit, and Florida came away with a 5-4 win in a shootout.
Since then, the Panthers have lost three of their last four games but are coming off a home victory over Toronto on Tuesday. Goalie Tim Thomas, who has been struggling for much of the year, came up big by saving 20 of 21 shot attempts. The offense also woke up by scoring four goals and their first power play goal in three games. Florida has struggled all year in power play attempts, scoring just two power play goals since the calendar changed to 2014.
Detroit has won two of its last three and is fresh off a shutout win over Vancouver on Monday. The Red Wings are still plying inconsistent hockey, which has cost them all season long. If I isn’t the goaltender giving up five or six goals, it’s the offense continuing having a hard time scoring. Detroit is really taking advantage of power play opportunities as of late, as three of its last seven goals have come on power play attempts.
Picking this game is difficult considering the way both teams have struggled all year with consistency. Detroit is obviously the better team and is a solid 14-8-1-3 on the road. However, the Red Wings haven’t been able to figure the Panthers out at all this season. Florida has dominated the season series and has split the last 10 games.
Just for the sake of Florida being at home, I’ll roll the dice and pick the Panthers in a pick em game.
