Nashville Predators -125 / Florida Panthers +104 -- Over/Under: 6
The Nashville Predators and the Florida Panthers meet in NHL action from the BB&T Center on Friday night.
The Nashville Predators will look to start the 2nd half as strong as they finished the first, winning back-to-back games following a 2-1 win over Vegas last time out. Vegas opened the scoring in the first period and would carry that advantage into the 2nd period before Ryan Johansen tied the game just :52 into the 2nd period and Nick Bonino gave the Preds the lead just 3:01 later. Nashville would hold onto that cushion throughout the 2nd period and through the 3rd to hold on for the win despite being outshot 48-27 in the game, including 14-2 in the final period. Juuse Saros got the win to improve to 12-6-1 this season after stopping 47 of the 48 shots faced in the winning effort.
The Florida Panthers will also look to make a push in the 2nd half of the season after finishing the first half on a 3-game winning streak after a 6-2 win over San Jose in their last outing. Aaron Ekblad opened the scoring for the Panthers late in the opening period to carry the lead into the 2nd period. San Jose tied the game before Mike Matheson re-took the lead for the Panthers just 1:46 later. San Jose tied the game once again at 2-2 to head to the 3rd period deadlocked. Keith Yandle and Vincent Trocheck scored :09 apart early in the 3rd to take a quick 4-2 lead before Frank Vatrano added a 5th and Nick Bjugstad added one more in the final minute of the 3rd to secure the win for Florida. Roberto Luongo got the win to improve to 10-11-1 this season after allowing both goals on 29 shots faced in the winning effort.
Nashville is 5-2 in their last 7 road games and 17-8 in their last 25 games against the Eastern Conference while the under is 2-0-2 in their last 4 games overall. Florida is 3-7 in their last 10 games overall and 3-8 in their last 11 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 11-1-1 in their last 13 games following a win. Nashville is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
The plus money with Florida is tempting considering Nashville’s recent struggles against the Panthers and the fact that the Panthers carried a 3-game winning streak into the break. However, a lengthy break like the all-star week is sure to slow down some of that momentum as it probably couldn’t have come at a worse time for Florida. Nashville needs to start the 2nd half strong to continue their playoff push, and even on the road I think Nashville starts off on the right foot with a road win here.
