New York and Tampa Bay had scored 14 goals on Tuesday heading in to this matchup but both offenses were held in check. New York’s Chris Kreider scored in the first to finish a 3 on 1 break before the Lightning evened the score in the second on Yanni Gourde’s short handed tally.
JT Miller’s goal at just 1:19 of the extra session gave New York the two points and made Henrik Lundqvist and his 27 stops a winner while a great 33 save performance from Andrei Vasilevskiy salvaged a point for the Lightning.
The Florida Panthers continue their long home stand when the New York Rangers come to town Saturday. Florida looks to end a three game skid following a 7-3 defeat at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night.
The Blue Jackets offense was running on all cylinders with Oliver Bjorkstrand and Josh Anderson leading the offense with two goals apiece while Boone Jenner, Tyler Mott and Markus Hannikainen also found the back of the net. Jenner and Matt Calvert also had a pair of assists in helping goalie Sergei Bobrovsky to the win.
The Panthers received a pair of goals off the stick of Vincent Trocheck with Mark Pysyk also lighting the lamp but James Reimer gave up four goals on 19 shots and was replaced by Antti Niemi who allowed three scores on 21 shots.
