The Florida Panthers and the Los Angeles Kings meet in NHL action from the Staples Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Florida Panthers will look to add to their current 3-game winning streak after a 4-2 win over San Jose in their last outing. San Jose opened the scoring before Jamie McGinn tied the game just after the midway point of the opening frame. San Jose would re-take the lead, taking a 2-1 lead into the 2nd period. Dryden Hunt would tie the game early in the 2nd and Mike Hoffman would give Florida the lead late in the 2nd to take a 3-2 lead. Frank Vatrano added a 4th for insurance early on in the 3rd to secure the victory for the Panthers in the win. Sam Montembeault got the win to improve to 3-0-1 this season, stopping 26 of 28 shots faced in the winning effort.
The Los Angeles Kings will look to rebound after a 3-1 loss to Nashville in their last outing. Nashville opened the scoring with the lone goal of the opening period, taking a 1-0 lead into the 2nd where Austin Wagner tied the game for the Kings early on in the period. Nashville would respond later in the frame with a pair of goals 2:27 apart to take a 3-1 lead. The Predators would close the door in the rest of the 2nd and 3rd periods to secure the win and send Los Angeles back empty-handed when the final horn sounded. Jonathan Quick ended up with the loss, falling to 13-20-6 after allowing 3 goals on 34 shots faced in the losing effort.
Florida is 5-2 in their last 7 games against a team with a losing record and 1-4 in their last 5 road games while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games against the Western Conference. Los Angeles is 2-14 in their last 16 games overall and 1-7 in their last 8 home games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games as an underdog. Florida is 5-16 in the last 21 meetings between these two teams and 1-8 in the last 9 meetings between these two teams in Los Angeles.
Florida has had barely any success over the years against the Kings, both overall and on the road. However, this is a cheap price for a Florida team still in the thick of a playoff race, while the Kings are simply playing for ping pong balls right now. If Florida wants any remote chance of the playoffs to remain alive, the Panthers have to win games like this. I’ll lay the juice with Florida in this spot as more of a fade from Los Angeles.
