The Kings and Coyotes square off in Los Angeles as these two former Pacific division foes renew hostilities at the Staples Center.
The Coyotes head into Thursday night’s encounter with the Kings under the radar once again as they have quietly pieced together a 5-2-2 start to the season but haven’t made a big fuss in the media. In typical Phoenix fashion they have won games through timely goal scoring and a stingy defensive effort and they’ll need to do that once again here against a very good LA Kings team who will look to improve on their 6-4 mark. Mike Smith, who scored a goal just two games ago against the Detroit Red Wings look to contribute in more traditional ways on Thursday as his play between the pipes against a tough LA forward unit will be vital to the outcome of this one.
The Kings meanwhile have slipped a bit out of the gates by their standards as they’re only two games above .500 but with only 10 games under their belt you can’t be disappointed with a 60% winning ratio. The Kings also started last season relatively slowly but came on strong and ended the season as one of the league’s hottest teams which is something we can expect from them again this year. For some reason I have really liked the underdogs this week and I am tempted to side with the Coyotes here as they’re playing very well but to me LA is the better team and should get it done. Either way I think we see some action here and while both goalies are very solid I can see this being a contest where the red light gets worn out. Siding on the over here.
