It seems like for every two steps forward the New Jersey Devils take this season they immediately take one step back. They had an opportunity on Saturday night to take advantage of a Philadelphia Flyers club that came into the game reeling after a 7-0 defeat on Friday on home ice. Instead of coming out hard from the start and trying to keep the negative vibes going for the Flyers, the Devils were lethargic from the get go. New Jersey managed just 14 shots on goal in the entire game and fell by a final of 1-0. It was an unexcusable effort for a club that's in the position that the Devils are currently in. Now they've got to travel to Minnesota to take on old friend Zach Parise and the Minnesota Wild. The Wild are off to another strong start this year but we saw this last year with a club that just didn't have the pieces to maintain it, even over a shortened schedule. Minnesota needs to find a way to keep up this level of play over the course of an 82 game season and that's not going to be easy. If they want to compete for a playoff spot the most important thing for them will be to beat teams like New Jersey on home ice in game like this. There's no excuse to come out like New Jersey did yesterday on home ice. If Minnesota plays the way they have been this season that should be enough to take this one.
