The Capitals look to continue their historic season as they take to the road to battle a desperate Minnesota Wild team.
The Washington Capitals are tearing apart the Eastern Conference this season as they are 39-9-4 this season and hold a ridiculous 15 point lead over the New York Rangers for the Metro division crown and 12 on the Panthers for the top spot in the East. The Caps’ run is even more impressive when you look at the Western Conference as well as the closest team to them in the race for the President’s Trophy is the reigning Cup champs who are 36-17-4 through 57 games and are six back of Washington but have also played five more games than the Caps so at this rate it is safe to say who the favourite is to lock up the best mark in the NHL. The Caps do have a tough task in front of them though as the Wild are in desperation mode in the Western Conference and need a big time win here to get some confidence heading towards a run at a wild card spot.
The Minnesota Wild are in a big time funk right now as they continue to sputter in the Central division and if they can’t right the ship and start stockpiling wins in a hurry they run the risk of missing the playoffs altogether. The Wild have gone 1-7-2 in their last 10 contests and have slipped into sixth in the division and are 13 points back of the Blues for the third automatic berth in the division and are slowly slipping out of the wild card race as well. Minny is usually a tough out when they play at home and this season they are a respectable 14-8-4 at the X but need to add to that and quick if they’re going to save their season. Unfortunately for them they get the league’s best here and while you can’t count them out entirely I think they will need to play a strong defensive game if they’re going to win.
