Two teams headed in opposite directions square off in New Jersey on Monday night as the Coyotes have dropped five in a row while the home side looks for their fourth consecutive victory.
The Coyotes have gone from bad to worse and if there was ever a question of whether they were going to fire sale it has certainly been answered with their play of late and with the trade deadline just over a week away we can expect to see a number of current Coyotes in new jerseys very soon. The Coyotes are in the running to land a top three draft pick and if the lottery bounces their way they could very well end up with either Jack Eichel or Connor McDavid to add to Max Domi and form a very exciting tandem for the future but Arizona has a ton of gaping holes and will need at least a couple of seasons before they get back on track as they need to address their goaltending and depth up front. Arizona has been better on the road than at home this season but haven't been great at either spot and now heading into Jersey where the Devils have started to turn things up it doesn't look like the greatest spot to turn things around.
New Jersey is coming off their third win in a row and are beginning to play their way out of the draft lottery and towards the wild card bunch and while it is unlikely they get in they are certainly making a point that they have what it takes to compete with the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference. The Devils are still 10 points back of the second wild card spot and while that is certainly attainable through the last 23 games it seems unlikely that they will bring in some pieces to help them get there and that some of their trading chips will be on the move as well with the deadline fast approaching. The Devils have played much better of late and Corey Schneider has been solid all season and while things may not work out in the end for the Devils this isn't the place to jump ship as they should get the win at home against a woeful Coyotes side.
