The New Jersey Devils look to play their way out of their recent slump against Atlantic division foes as they host the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night.
The Canadiens head into New Jersey look to thrive in the spoiler role as their shot at the playoffs is all but lost after the trade deadline and subsequent injuries to two key pieces as both Max Pacioretty and rookie defenseman will miss significant time with injuries. The Habs have had a dismal season and a large part of that has been their inability to win games away from home and their recent stretch has them with just 8 wins on the road in their last 30 tries, and against a Devils side that still has playoff hopes they are in trouble. Antii Niemi is expected to get the start here with Carey Price still sidelined as he will face off against Corey Schneider who will look to give the Devils back some of their early season swagger that had many believing they were destined for a lengthy playoff run.
The Devils have battled inconsistency this season but one thing that has been a source of confidence has been the play of Taylor Hall who is on a miraculous point scoring streak and is looking like the former first overall pick the Devils traded for with the Oilers a few seasons ago. The Devils have stumbled recently though as they have just two wins in their last seven contests and are winless in their last five tries against the Canadiens, but in New Jersey’s favour is a huge goaltending edge and overall team depth up top as Montreal is incredibly thin right now and won’t put up much of an offensive threat, especially without Pacioretty.
The Canadiens are 3-9 in their last 12 overall and 6-15 in their last 21 against the East while the Devils are 2-6 in their last eight against the Atlantic and 1-5 in their last six meetings at home against the Habs. The Devils have high hopes to end their losing streak against the Canadiens here and with a short handed lineup for the Canadiens look for the Devils to do just that.
