A Saturday night victory over the rival New York Rangers wasn't enough to get the New Jersey Devils back on track. New Jersey has lost two straight since their victory a week ago in New York and the Devils have now lost five of their last six games. Friday night the Devils traveled to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins and fell behind right from the start. Just 41 seconds into the game the Penguins were ahead 1-0 and before the end of the first period they had tallied twice more to put the Devils in a 3-0 hole. Patrik Elias and Dainius Zubrus scored less than a minute apart in the second period but despite outshooting Pittsburgh 19-5 in the second and 13-6 in the third they couldn't get the equalizer. Cory Schneider dropped to 4-7-4 but bounced back after a rough first period. Now the Devils return home to take on a Tampa Bay Lightning club that has been having struggles of their own of late. The Lightning did rebound on Thursday night when they hosted the Detroit Red Wings and skated away with a 2-1 shootout victory. Nikita Kucherov's third goal of the season tied things in the final minute of the second period and the Lightning would eventually win it on Martin St. Louis' goal in the shootout. St. Louis was the only player for either club to score. Ben Bishop made 28 saves to pick up the win and stopped all five shots he faced in overtime. New Jersey heads into this one having just played on Friday night but despite the loss there were a lot of positive signs for them. Tampa Bay has the much better record but clearly the odds makers aren't believers of the Lightning in this one. Look for the Devils to bounce back on home ice.
