The New York Islanders look to stay red hot on home ice as they welcome the Carolina Hurricanes to the Barclay’s Center on Monday.
The Hurricanes look to improve on their dismal road record as they head into Brooklyn to face off against the New York Islanders as they are in the midst of an ugly losing skid and they can all but kiss their playoff hopes goodbye. Carolina came into the season with a ton of hype as they finished last season with a bang and while they have had glimpses of hope in pockets of the regular season they are in a tough spot right now in the middle of a 3-11 stretch in their last 14 games and with a young roster and an imminent top end draft pick I think Hurricanes fans best move in from this season and focus on the future. Cam Ward is expected to make to the call in the Carolina crease as he will face off against Thomas Greiss who has really settled in nicely as the Islanders every day starter.
The Isles got off to a slow start to the season and many had them written off as one of the league’s biggest disappointments but they have ridden a very strong second half of the season into a playoff spot right now and will be fighting until the final whistle to ensure they have a spot in this year’s NHL’s postseason. New York is led by John Tavares as they are every single season but they do have a handful of rock solid scoring options in a supporting role and if they can continue to get clutch goals from unlikely sources and keep their home winning ways afloat I think this group will certainly qualify in the Eastern Conference.
The Canes are 14-37 in their last 51 road games and 6-14 in their last 20 against the Metro while New York is 21-6 in their last 27 Monday games and are 4-0 in their last four home games. Carolina is in tough here as the Isles are rock solid at home and need to find a way to win here to keep their drive for the playoffs intact.
