Gabriel Landeskog added two assists for the Avalanche and Semyon Varlamov allowed four goals on 42 shots to get the loss.
Andre Burakovsky, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Matt Niskanen scored in regulation for the Capitals. Kuznetsov netted the winner in overtime and Alex Ovechkin assisted twice to make the 34 saves of Phoenix Copley a winner.
The New York Islanders return home after squeezing by New Jersey 2-1 in a shootout on Wednesday. Kevin Rooney gave New Jersey a 1-0 lead in the first but the offense was held in check after that with Cory Schneider getting the loss despite 27 saves.
Matt Barzal also scored in the first period for the Islanders with Josh Bailey scoring the only goal in the shootout. Thomas Greiss stood tall between the pipes for New York with 30 stops to improve to 15-8-2.
