Maddening inconsistency has plagued the New York Islanders all season long and their previous game against the Los Angeles Kings is just another example of that. New York had snapped a four game losing streak two days earlier with a win over the Nashville Predaotrs and looked well on their way to winning their second straight on Thursday night. Casey Cizikas and Aaron Ness scored second period goals to give New York a 2-0 lead, but the Islanders allowed three goals in the third period on home ice with the Kings playing their backup goaltender and ended up falling 3-2 in regulation. John Tavares can only do so much and with other teams constantly focusing on him there really isn't a lot of margin for error for the Islanders right now. Kevin Poulin made 21 saves in the game and has proven that he deserves more starts behind the up and down Evgeni Nabokov. The Islanders are going to have to find a way to string a winning streak together and then stabilize and eliminate the poor stretches like they're in here.
The Detroit Red Wings have really been having a rough go of it on home ice recently so maybe getting on the road and heading to the Nassau Coliseum is exactly what they need. Friday night brough yet another home ice loss as they fell by a final of 4-3 in a shootout at the hands of the Washington Capitals. Johan Franzen scored twice and Danny DeKeyser added a power play goal in the second period that gave the Red Wings a 3-1 lead that they would eventually blow by allowing two Capitals goals in the final 20 minutes. Jimmy Howard made 33 saves in the game but he couldn't save the Red Wings once we got to the skills competition. For a team that is struggling as much as the Red Wings are on home ice it's not a bad thing to get away and head out on the road. Facing a team like the Islanders that isn't overly physical and that they should be able to take advantage of is just another plus. This is a big game for both clubs on Saturday night.
