The Red Wings look for their second big win in as many days as they take to the road to face off against the Islanders in Brooklyn.
The Detroit Red Wings outlasted the Boston Bruins in an Original Six and Atlantic division show down at the Joe yesterday afternoon and they will look for an encore against the Isles as the season finale fast approaches. The Wings are right in the hunt for the division title as they sit just three points back of the Florida Panthers for the Atlantic perch and they can trim it even further with an inspired victory on Monday against an Isles side that is coming off a 6-3 loss to the Hurricanes in Raleigh on Saturday. The Wings are 14-8-3 on the road this season and will likely send Jimmy Howard to the crease while the Islanders are 18-8-3 at home and will counter with Jaroslav Halak.
New York meanwhile sits in fourth place in the Metro division thanks to a surge from the New Jersey Devils but luckily for them they hold three games in hand on their rivals and are in the driver’s seat to lock up the third and final automatic berth out of their division. The Isles have a great young team that is in the midst of a franchise ascension and currently hold on to a 29-19-6 record and despite sitting in fourth place have a plus-17 goal differential that puts them in the top class in the Eastern Conference. The Isles are a tough out on home ice and while Detroit is coming off a big win I think New York adds to their mystique at the Barclay’s Center with another big win.
