The New York Islanders look to shake off a loss on the road in Buffalo last night as they head back home to host the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night.
The Red Wings head into Brooklyn to kick off their weekend slate as they take on a New York Islanders side who is in the midst of an ugly losing streak and is coming off a loss last night against one of the league’s worst teams in the Buffalo Sabres. Detroit has had recent success in this series as they have won five of their last seven meetings with the Islanders and with a 4-0 mark in their last four Friday games the Wings should be more than confident they can get a road win here against the Isles. Detroit has struggled mightily against Eastern Conference foes though as they have just 18 wins in their last 59 matchups against conference rivals and with New York having Saturday off and coming off a terrible game last night you can bet they will leave it all on the ice in hopes of a win in this spot.
The Islanders continue to struggle in the defensive zone as the over is hitting at an alarming clip and with a seven goal outing last night with the Sabres I think it is safe to say that this will feature a number of goals as well. The Islanders are usually a tough out at the Barclay’s Center but they have dropped four of their last five on home ice and are winless in their last five games playing in the second leg of a back to back and with Thomas Greiss expected to get the start here it doesn’t really give us a ton of confidence backing the home side in this one.
The Wings are 4-11 in their last 15 playing on two day’s rest and winless in their last five against a team with a losing record while the Isles are 1-4 in their last five against the East and 1-5 in their last six Friday games. Detroit needs a win here but the Isles are a tough team to figure out so I think the total is the better play as this one should sail over the number as most Islanders games have this season.
