The Florida Panthers head North for a battle with the New York Islanders on Saturday in a game between two Eastern Conference teams. In Florida’s last game, they were defeated by the Washington Capitals at home by the score of 5-4 in overtime. The Panthers received offensive production from all over the ice with four different players scoring goals as Frank Vatrano, Brett Connolly, Aleksander Barkov and Evgenii Dadonov all tallied goals for the Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky started in goal for the Panthers and took the loss in the game, allowing 5 goals on 31 Washington shots.
The Panthers are now 7-3-5 on the season which puts them in 4th place in the Atlantic Division. Jonathan Huberdeau leads the team in points with 19 and in goals with 9, however he has yet to record a power play goal this season. Aleksander Barkov leads the Panthers in assists with 16 and has 4 while on the power play. Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky is now 6-2-4 with 1 shut out and a 3.50 goals against average so far this season. Florida’s backup goalie, Sam Montembeault is currently 1-1-1 with a goals against average of 2.81 on the year.
In their last game, the New York Islanders lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins by the score of 4-3 in overtime. After taking a 3-0 lead into the 3rd period, the Penguins rallied back to tie it and Bryan Rust scored to win the game in the extra period to give Pittsburgh the win. Casey Cizikas, Cal Clutterbuck and Adam Pelech all scored goals for the Islanders, but it wasn’t enough for New York to get a win. Semyon Varlamov recorded the overtime loss while in net for New York as he allowed 4 goals on 39 Pittsburgh shots in the game.
The New York Islanders are currently 11-3-1 on the season and the loss in overtime snapped the Islanders 10 game winning streak. As of right now, the Islanders are in 2nd place in the Metropolitan Division. The Islanders point leader is Josh Bailey who has recorded 12 points on the season. The goals leader is Mathew Barzal who has recorded 6 goals this season with 1 coming on the power play. Defenseman Deon Toews leads the Islanders in assists as he has recorded 7 on the season. Semyon Varlamov is currently 5-2-1 with a shutout to go along with a goals against average of 2.37. Thomas Greiss is 6-1-0 with a 2.00 goals against average.
Florida is scoring 3.60 goals per game and allowing 3.53 goals per game this year. New York is scoring 3.07 goals per game and allowing 2.27 goals per game so far this season. Both teams are clearly capable of scoring goals, so this game will ultimately come down to which teams goalie plays better. Therefore, I have to go with the Islanders at home in this game. Islanders win 5-3 and go over on the under/over of 6.
