The New York Islanders look for their first series win since 1993 as they return home for a game six show down with the Florida Panthers on Sunday.
The Florida Panthers are on the brink of elimination after losing a pivotal game five show down on home ice on Friday night and now have to head into the Barclay’s Center with their season on the line in order to force a deciding game seven back at home. The Cats have been inconsistent in this series as they have looked like Cup contenders on some nights but very sloppy on others and while you can’t take anything away from the Isles who have played them well you would have to think as the top seed in the Atlantic bracket that they would be in a good spot to at least emerge out of the division and challenge for the Eastern Conference title. Roberto Luongo continues to get the call in the Florida crease as he will go up against Thomas Greiss.
The Islanders meanwhile were a dark horse in these playoffs after finding themselves in the much easier Atlantic bracket than in the Metro side thanks to their swan dive at the end of the season dropped them into a wild card spot and now they have a shot at taking down their first round opponents and setting up a second round show down with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Isles have some pretty solid pieces in the offensive zone and an underrated blue line that could end up being the difference in this series and with the home crowd on their side you can be sure that New York will be fired up on Sunday. Florida was my pick to get through this series but circumstances change and with New York at home in this one I think they snap their ugly funk and get a series clinching victory.
