The Wild look to shake off a tough loss yesterday against the Bruins as they head to the road to take on the New York Islanders.
Minnesota is in the mix in the crazy Western Conference playoff picture as they sit in the seven hole and are five points up on the eighth place Stars but a loss on home ice yesterday and a back to back situation against the Isles tonight could create a setback. Minnesota is a very good team that is well balanced all over the ice and are not pushovers by any means but I think the team’s success will ultimately come down to their goaltending which at this rate is subpar at best. The Wild have a ton of offensive producers in Mikko Koivu, Zach Parise, Dany Heatley, and Matt Moulson and a solid blue line anchored by Ryan Suter but they are still an inconsistent team and that might cost them a spot in the playoffs if they aren’t careful.
The Islanders have nothing to play for to close out the regular season except for pride and to build momentum for next year but with John Tavares sidelined and the team struggling it wouldn’t surprise me to see them try to get a more favourable draft pick. New York does have some talent in the form of Kyle Okposo and Michael Grabner but against a Minnesota team that is so sound defensively and can score with all four lines I think they will be in tough even though they’re on home ice. Minny is playing in a back to back but I don’t see that being much of a factor for them and I see them skating into New York and making a statement that they won’t be going anywhere come playoff time. At this price as well it looks like the odds makers are goading us into taking the Isles but I won’t bite.
