The Senators look to shake off an ugly loss at home against the NHL Leading Capitals as they take to the road to battle the Islanders in Brooklyn.
The Ottawa Senators took one on the chin against the league’s best team last night as their home crowd couldn’t give them an added boost and now they sit in fifth to last in the Eastern Conference and are seven points back of the Flyers for the final playoff spot. Ottawa really hasn’t looked like a playoff team over the last few weeks and while they have a lot to look forward to as their young core has stepped up this season in a big way it is still a disappointment for them to miss out on the playoffs after such a great run last year. Craig Anderson got the call in last night’s game and while he may get the green light once again in this one I wouldn’t be surprised to see Andrew Hammond instead who earned a shutout on Saturday.
The Islanders meanwhile are in a dog fight in the Metro division and they too haven’t been playing their best hockey of late as they are 4-4-2 in their last 10 and now occupy a wild card spot thanks to a sensational run from the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Isles have had a strong season and are quietly 14 games above the .500 mark but their play on the road, which accounts for 15 of their 24 regulation losses is a bit of a concern as they are likely to take to the road to start their first round playoff series if they even qualify. However, their play at their new home has been excellent and with the Sens in a back to back this is certainly New York’s game to lose.
