The Phoenix Coyotes got their season off to a solid start with a 4-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday night but then were defeated by the same score by the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Mike Smith made 47 saves on the night and kept his team in the game but all three of the goals he allowed were in the first period and the Coyotes never recovered. San Jose was relentlesss and the Coyotes had no answer aside from Oliver Ekman-Larsson's second period tally. Now they embark on a four game road trip that takes them to Long Island, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Carolina.
In New York the Islanders have split their first two games of the year as well with both games ending in a shootout. Saturday's home opener against the Columbus Blue Jackets ended in disappointing fashion with the Islanders blowing a two goal lead and eventually falling by a score of 3-2. Lubomir Visnovsky and Matt Moulson scored second period goals but the Columbus evened things up with two in the third and won it in the skills competition. Evgeni Nabokov took the loss after making 27 saves in regulation. The defense is going to be the biggest question mark for this club all year long and it let them down late in the game on Saturday. They'll have their work cut out for them on Tuesday against a Coyotes club that can really lock the opponent down.
