The New York Islanders look to shake out of their ugly Monday funk as they host the San Jose Sharks at the Barclay’s Center on Monday evening.
The Sharks head into Monday night’s contest with the Islanders coming off a victory against the Los Angeles Kings and will look for a repeat performance against the Isles in this spot who have dropped their last five contests to kick off a week. San Jose made a splash in the offseason when they landed Erik Karlsson from the Ottawa Senators and his presence on the blue line makes them one of the favourites to win the Stanley Cup this season as they are loaded across the board and match up very well here against an Islanders side who lost their franchise corner stone in John Tavares in the summer. Martin Jones is expected to get the start here as he will face off against Robin Lehner who will be out to prove he is worthy of being the team’s every night starter ahead of Thomas Greiss.
The Islanders have struggled against Western Conference foes as they have lost seven of their last eight games and things don’t get any easier here against a Sharks side that is 19-7 in their last 26 games against weak home ice teams. New York still has some solid pieces and will certainly not lay down this season but they are in a very tough division and don’t have a great chance at sneaking into the playoffs behind the likes of Washington, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia.
The Sharks are 4-1 in their last five Monday games and 7-3 in their last 10 after allowing two or fewer goals in their previous outing while the Isles are 3-9 in their last 12 home games and 4-1 in their last five overall. New York will surprise some teams but I don’t see it happening here against a very good San Jose side who found their stride against LA after a loss to Anaheim and now they have their easiest matchup to date.
