The New York Rangers welcome the Buffalo Sabres to Madison Square Garden for a Thursday NHL tilt.
The Buffalo Sabres are not going to the postseason but they could be a huge spoiler for teams that do have playoff dreams. Buffalo went in to their bye week with a 3-1 victory versus the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets that halted a five game slide. The Blue Jackets lone goal came from Artemi Panarin on the power play in the third.
The Sabres saw Benoit Pouliot, Kyle Okposo score for a 2-0 lead before Jack Eichel added an empty netter with just six seconds remaining. Eichel and Okposo also had assists and Linus Ullmark picked up the win fore Buffalo with 44 stops. Sergei Bobrovsky took the loss for Columbus with to goals allowed on 28 shots.
The New York Rangers have four wins in their last ten contests and know they need to do better then that to climb out of 4th place in the Metropolitan. New York had suffered three straight losses before putting everything together in routing the Philadelphia 5-1 on Tuesday with the Jordan Weal scoring the only Flyers goal in the first.
The Rangers scored five unanswered goals with Rick Nash leading the way with a pair of goals while Paul Carey, JT Miller and Michael Grabner also lighting the lamp. Henrik Lundqvist picked up the win for New York with 25 saves while Brian Elliott gave up all five goals on 21 shots.
Under is 7-1 in Sabres last 8 when their opponent scores 5 goals or more in their previous game and under is 5-1-1 in Sabres last 7 games following a win and over is 9-2-1 in Sabres last 12 games playing on 3 or more days rest. Under is 4-0 in Rangers last 4 vs. a team with a winning % below .400 and under is 5-0 in Rangers last 5 vs. Atlantic and Rangers are 0-4 in their last 4 games following a win. Road team is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings and Sabres are 3-11 in the last 14 meetings and Sabres are 2-5 in the last 7 meetings in New York.
The Sabres have not been totally dominated in this matchup although I need to see goalies first before settling on New York…
