The Sabres skate into New York on Monday night looking for a victory that well propel them out of the Atlantic division basement while the Rangers look to shake off a 3-0 loss in Ottawa yesterday.
The Buffalo Sabres haven’t had a strong campaign and while anticipation was that they were going to struggle again and build for the future there are some that expected the overhaul to happen over night and that they would be playoff bound this season. Buffalo has a ton of pieces in place moving forward but for now they are 14 points back of the third place Red Wings and are in the running for Auston Matthews who is this year’s consensus first overall selection in the NHL draft. The Sabres are 10-10-2 on the road this season and will start Robin Lehner while the Rangers are 17-5-2 at home and will likely go with Antii Raanta and give Henrik Lundqvist the night off.
The Rangers meanwhile have been up and down over the last couple of weeks and their road record is a cause for concern as they dropped to 9-12-3 away from home yesterday against the Ottawa Senators in what was a 3-0 final for the home team. New York still sits in second place in the division but are just a single point up on the Islanders and have played two more games than their arch rivals which makes these match ups with the league also rans very important. The Rangers should be able to rebound in a big way here even though they have Raanta in net and not Lundqvist as they seem to be much better at home than on the road and in a must win type game I think they get it done with ease.
