NHL action comes to Madison Square Garden where the New York Rangers host the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Chicago Blackhawks were hot a few short weeks ago and seemed to have shaken off the early season blues but the team has struggled since with losses in four of five where the team has been outscored 17-7. Chicago comes off of a 4-3, overtime loss at the Calgary Flames on Sunday. Jordan Oesterle, Jonathan Toews and Brandon Saad provided the scoring for the Blackhawks.
The balanced attack of the Flames received a pair of goals of the stick of Matthew Tkachuk with Sean Monahan also scoring. Mark Giordano lit the lamp 52 seconds in to the extra session to secure the two points for Calgary while Mike Smith stopped 34 shots to get the win. Jeff Glass recorded 35 saves for the Blackhawks to absorb the loss.
The New York Rangers have lost the scoring touch at times over the past week or so with the team going 2-3 in this stretch. New York is coming off a 3-2, overtime victory at the struggling Buffalo Sabres on Monday where the team coughed up a 2-0 lead. The Sabres saw scoring from Sam Reinhart and Rasmus Ristolainen with Kyle Okposo logging a pair of helpers.
The Rangers scored twice in the first period and appeared on track for a big offensive game but the offense went in to hibernation. Paul Carey and Michael Grabner found the back of the net before JT Miller lit the lamp on the power play in overtime. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 31 shots to pick up the win for New York while Robin Lehner allowed three goals on 42 shots,
Under is 6-1 in Blackhawks last 7 vs. Eastern Conference and Blackhawks are 2-10 in their last 12 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600 and Blackhawks are 5-1 in their last 6 games playing on 2 days rest. Under is 4-0 in Rangers last 4 overall and under is 4-0 in Rangers last 4 vs. a team with a losing record and under is 6-1 in Rangers last 7 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game. Road team is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings and Blackhawks are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in New York and under is 6-2-1 in the last 9 meetings.
Chicago and the under have been strong plays in this matchup but with little known Jeff glass in the nets for the Blackhawks I’m tempted to go with the over for now…
