The Line: New York Rangers -190 / Colorado Avalanche +175 --- Over/Under: 5.5
The New York Rangers welcome the Colorado Avalanche to MSG on Thursday to kick off the NHL season.
It’s hardly a secret that the Colorado Avalanche struggled in all areas but the question is whether the team will show any kind of improvement. The Avalanche scored a mere two goals per game and allowed 3.4 goals with both numbers being last in the NHL. The rebuilding Avalanche were pegged to trade Gabriel Landeskog and/or Matt Duchene but didn’t so leading goal scorer Mikko Rantanen will be asked to increase his production further as will veryone on the roster. The Avs are hoping Nathan MacKinnon returns to the form we saw in his rookie year and light the lamp for 20+ goals. The bottom line for Colorado is the offense and has too many ifs and but’s on the roster and didn’t make any significant changes. Throw in goalie Semyon Varlamove had surgery in the off season and the Avs have questions.
The New York Rangers were the number four squad in the Metropolitan at 48-28-2-4. The Rangers have a well deserved reputation as tough defensive team but it was all about offense a season ago with a 3.1 goal average that was 4th in the game while allowing 2.6 goals which ranked #12. If defense wins championships, New York has the pieces to make that statement become fact after signing Kevin Shattenkirk to help bolster the blue line and help goalie Henrik Lundqvist return to the form that made him a brick wall for opposing attacks. The Rangers will be able to do their share of scoring behind a Mats Zuccarello, Mika Zibanejed, Rick Nash and plenty of quality depth.
Over is 4-0-1 in Avalanche last 5 games following a win and over is 5-1-2 in Avalanche last 8 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game and Avalanche are 11-44 in their last 55 overall. Over is 3-0-2 in Rangers last 5 overall and Rangers are 0-4 in their last 4 games playing on 3 or more days rest and over is 5-1 in Rangers last 6 vs. Central. Road team is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings and Avalanche are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings and Avalanche are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in New York.
I think the Rangers want to come out and get a win so I expect an ‘A’ effort from this team Thursday…
