The New York Islanders meet up with their cross town rivals and bitter enemies in the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.
The Islanders look to continue their dominance over the Rangers when the two sides meet up in New York City on Thursday night and with the win the Isles would move to 7-1 in their last 8 contests and continue their ascent up the Eastern Conference standings. The Isles are on a tear recently and are certainly one of the biggest surprises of the first half of the season as they have done just fine without former franchise cornerstone and captain John Tavares in the lineup and would love to earn a road win here against the Rangers. Robin Lehner is expected to get the call in the crease for the Islanders as he will face off against Rangers mainstay Henrik Lundqvist who has enjoyed better seasons in the Big Apple as his team has dropped 4 games in a row and are a woeful 1-6 in their last 7 home games.
The Rangers have long been a contender in the Eastern Conference but they have since fallen on hard times and look as though they may be sellers at the trade deadline as this hasn’t been their year and their reign as top team in New York may come to an abrupt end. New York has plenty of team to turn things around but they don’t have a bona fide top end scorer and their play across the board really hasn’t been great since the season started and with the Isles on the calendar things don’t get any easier for them as they have lost 12 of their last 14 to their cross town rivals. The Isles will be hoping this is a low scoring encounter as they have had most of their success in tight games while the Rangers will need to break things open if they want a chance at winning.
The Islanders are 4-0 in their last 4 road games and are 4-1 in their last 5 against the East while the Rangers are 2-11 in their last 13 Thursday games and just 2-7 in their last 9 at home against the Isles. The Rangers need to find a way to win this one but they simply are outclassed by the Islanders who shake off a tough loss against the Hurricanes for a big win at MSG.
