The Pittsburgh Penguins continue their chase for a division title as they head into MSG to face off against the New York Rangers on Monday night.
The Pittsburgh Penguins head into enemy territory on Monday as they face off against the lowly New York Rangers in a Metro division show down at Madison Square Garden as they aim to take top spot. The Pens have been playing their best hockey of the season over the last couple of weeks and are looking like a very dangerous group with the playoffs just around the corner, and while the Rangers haven’t had a great season they have looked good on home ice and present a tough matchup on Monday. Pittsburgh was idle on Sunday and head into MSG with a strong 17-8 record in their last 25 games playing on a day’s rest and they are 14-5 in their last 19 meetings against the Rangers and the favorite is 7-2 in their last 9 show downs overall.
The Rangers meanwhile have struggled this season and while they still have an outside shot at getting into the playoffs it could all come crashing down with a loss here against the Pens who still have a ton to play for in the Metro division race. New York is coming off an overtime victory against the Maple Leafs in Toronto and while they haven’t had a ton to celebrate this season they have been very good to start off the week over the last couple of seasons as they are 26-11 in their last 37 Monday games and could very well pull off the upset in this spot. New York is a disappointing 9-22 in their last 31 games against Metro division opponents and are 9-23 in their last 32 following a win which partially contributes to the Pens being a heavy favorite in this spot.
The Pens are 8-2 in their last 10 games in New York and 14-5 in their last 19 overall with the Rangers while New York is 2-6 in their last 8 against the East and 17-35 in their last 52 overall. New York hasn’t won a ton of games and while they are at home here the Pens have been lights out lately and with the offense taking center stage this one goes over.
