The Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers meet in NHL action from Madison Square Garden on Sunday night.
The Toronto Maple Leafs will look to build on their current 4-game winning streak after a 4-3 overtime win over Montreal in their last outing. Montreal opened the scoring less than a minute into the game before Andreas Johnsson and Nikita Zaitsev scored a pair of goals 2:22 apart less than a minute and a half after Montreal’s marker, carrying a 2-1 lead into the 2nd period. Montreal tied the game with the lone goal of the 2nd and took a lead 7:24 into the 3rd before William Nylander responded 1:11 later to make it 3-3 and that score line would hold up through the 3rd and into OT where John Tavares broke the deadlock and gave the Leafs the win 2:17 into overtime. Frederik Andersen got the win to improve to 25-11-2 after stopping 35 of 38 shots faced in the winning effort.
The New York Rangers will look to rebound after suffering a 3-0 shutout loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in their last outing. The game was scoreless through the first two periods before the ‘Canes broke the game open with a goal from Will Foegele. Andrei Svechnikov and Brock McGinn scored a pair of empty-netters :46 apart to seal the deal and send the Rangers home empty-handed with the Rangers being outshot 33-27. Pavel Buchnevich led the Rangers with 5 shots on goal while Vladislav Namestnikov added 3 shots on goal. Henrik Lundqvist took the loss, falling to 16-14-8 after stopping 30 of 31 shots faced in the losing effort.
Toronto is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall and 15-6 in their last 21 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 road games. New York is 1-4 in their last 5 home games and 17-36 in their last 53 games against the Eastern Conference while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games against the Atlantic division. Toronto is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams and 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in New York.
Getting a rested New York team at plus money is tempting considering that Toronto had to play overtime and claw out a hard-fought win against Montreal on Saturday. However, Toronto is playing the much better hockey of the two teams and need to rack up wins as much as possible down the stretch and have to take advantage of situations where they’re the better team. We are also getting a reasonable price with Toronto which is somewhat of a rarity nowadays, so I’ll lay the juice with Toronto in this spot.
