NHL action comes to Madison Square Garden where the New York Rangers host the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday.
The Vancouver Canucks continue their east coast road wing with a stop to face the New York Rangers on Sunday. Vancouver saw a two game winning streak come to an end in a 3-2 defeat at the New Jersey Devils on Friday night where the defense disappeared in a three goal second period. The Canucks saw Daniel Sedin score in the second and Bo Horvat tally in the third period on the power play but Jacob Markstrom allowed all three goals in the second to absorb the loss.
The Devils offense was silent in the first and third but fortunately their three goal second was enough support for the defense and goaltending. Taylor Hall gave New Jersey a 1-0 lead on an unassisted tally at 2:15 with Brian Boyle scoring with the man advantage for a 2-1 edge before Damon Severson scored the eventual game winner. Taylor Hall also added a pair of helpers to make a winner of Cory Schneider and his 23 saves.
The New York Rangers have been at the top of their game for several weeks with both the offense and defense having a hand in the success. New York has won three straight following a 2-1 overtime victory versus the visiting Detroit Red Wings on Friday night. Neither offense was able to do much through two periods before Tomas Tater gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 4:05 of the third period on the power play.
Chris Kreider got the Rangers even at 10:17 with both squads unable to score again in regulation. Mats Zuccarello put this game in the win column for New York just 37 seconds in to the extra session. Brady Skjel logged a pair of assists and Henrik Lundqvist recorded 40 saves to keep the Rangers hot. Jimmy Howard absorbed the loss for Detroit with a 29 save effort.
Under is 4-0 in Canucks last 4 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 days situation and under is 4-1-1 in Canucks last 6 Sunday games and over is 4-1 in Canucks last 5 overall. Under is 4-0 in Rangers last 4 Sunday games and Rangers are 7-0 in their last 7 home games and over is 4-0 in Rangers last 4 vs. Western Conference. Over is 3-0-1 in the last 4 meetings in New York and over is 4-1-1 in the last 6 meetings and road team is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings.
The Canucks have been one of the best in the game on the road so the chalk makes it difficult to back the Rangers. I’ll take a shot with the over once goalies are announced…
