The Capitals and Rangers meet up in New York on Tuesday before the Christmas as two of the hottest teams in the NHL.
The Washington Capitals locked up their third win in a row thanks to a 2-1 final over the Ottawa Senators in DC on Monday night and as such they have jumped past the Rangers for third place in the division heading into their show down this evening. The Caps are on an impressive 7-1-2 stretch in their last 10 contests and are starting to look like a threat in the Eastern Conference and are now just six points back of the Islanders for second in what once looked like a two headed race for the division crown. The Caps got a solid effort out of Braden Holtby last night and as it stands right now he could get the call once again in a pivotal match up with the Rangers but they could also lean on Justin Peters who was logging starters minutes in Carolina last season and can definitely do the job on a spot start basis.
The Rangers meanwhile are the hottest team in hockey at the moment as they have won six straight games and after a slow start to the year where they endured a number of injuries the Blue Shirts are back and ready to defend their Eastern Conference title. New York sits two points back of the Caps in the Metro division but they also have two games in hand which could come into play as the season moves along and the playoff races get a little tighter but even at this stage right before the Christmas break these teams know how important the divisional games are and even more so with these two battling for position. Despite Washington's impressive play of late I think they catch a tough break here playing on a back to back and they needed a special performance from Holtby last night just to grab the two points so for me I am on the Rangers here and I think they get it done in regulation.
